I think I've solved it. Then TurboPrint installation routine puts turboprint-control.desktop and turboprint-monitor.desktop in ~/Desktop. When I moved them to ~/.local/share/applications the icons appeared in the launcher when the apps were called.

dpkg -i --ignore-depends=cupsys turboprint_1.96-4_i386.deb
works to install TurboPrint 1.96-4, but then Upgrade manager decides to remove it. Guess it's time to upgrade to TurboPrint2. BTW, even with 10.10 the old PowerPC version of TurboPrint still works.

Problem solved. When I installed TurboPrint the Print Spooler was recognized incorrectly. When I reinstalled, I changed to the CUPS spooler and all is working correctly.
