Strange problem with CD printing after update

Post by alTP76 »

Hi,
I purchased a license for TurboPrint Pro some months ago, and everything
worked fine under Ubuntu 9.04 with my ip4300 from Canon.
I've upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 some weeks ago and now I'm installing
TurboPrint again to do some work, but something strange happened.
I went trough the installation process following the manual procedure
and all seemed fine. I imported the license key successfully and started
OpenOffice to print on some printable CDs.
I already checked the "Sizes" section under the Control Center, and
everything seems fine with circle inner and outer diameters, and with
page size (14 cm with 1 cm of border around).
Now I've already got my corresponding OpenOffice template with 14 cm
sizes and 1 cm borders al around, it's the same I've always used, but I
can't understand why it seems that the printer driver has some strange
offset (even if on the Sizes section of the Control Center both offsets
are zeroed) and the actual printout (both on the job preview window and
on the real output) are somewhat shifted toward the lower-right corner
of the "page" (talking about CDs here, because the test page that I
printed after installing the driver seemed ok).
What else can I check t restore the regular operation?
Thanks,

Alberto

Hi Alberto.

At least you're not alone with this issue. I have the same issue since I've upgraded from Mandriva 2009.1 with turboprint 2.11 to Mandriva 2010 with turboprint 2.12.

By adding a 1 cm grid to the provided template, I've been able to verify that there is exactly a 1 cm offset toward the lower right.

Anyone from Zedonet can help?

Hello,

I could reproduce the problem.

It looks like a bug in OpenOffice 3.1: If you print the CD template from OpenOffice and check "Print to file" and then view the Postscript file e.g. from a terminal window using

gs <filename>

Do the same from OpenOffice 3.0 and you will see that the output is shifted right and down by 1cm in OpenOffice 3.1.

I will investigate if there is a fix / workaround.

PS: Printing on CD/DVD from GIMP using the TurboPrint print plugin works fine on Ubuntu 9.10

Hi, thanks forthe feedback, I will try to fill a bug report as soon as I can if you didn't do it yet, hopefully it will be fixed.
I think it would be a good idea to post here too if some fix is released.

Does anybody know if newer OpenOffice.org releases still have this problem? I've filled a bug report on Ubuntu launchpad, but nobody seems to care about it at the moment.

OpenOffice 3.1.1 (build 9420) on Mandriva still has the issue.

Hi, OpenOffice.org 3.2.0 (default on Ubuntu 10.04) still have the problem, but now I'm wondering if it's a OOo's problem or a TurboPrint's one. I was maintaining a bug report on Ubuntu's bug tracker (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/510808) and doing some tests, so here is what I've found:

if the attached odg file is sent for file printing leaving the driver settings on A4, plain paper, default sheet feeding, the resulting PostScript file will be perfectly centered, while once the settings are changed to CD/DVD, CD Printable, CD Tray, the resulting PostScript will have bad alignment.

So perhaps the TurboPrinter driver is reporting a wrong page size / margins to the application before rendering? Please, ZEDOnet, help us in solving this bug, because it's getting really annoying.

Hello,

please excuse the delay!

Today I made many tests and found some strange results, but no solution:

- I created an identical 14x14cm document in OpenOffice Writer and it printed fine without the 1cm offset to the lower right

- I created documents in OpenOffice Draw that were slightly wider (14.1cm) or higher or both. When printing, there is a warning (document doesn't fit page) - I selected "Trim" and it printed fine without the offset

However, I could not find an error in the TurboPrint driver's specification of the page size.

Of course there might be a "workaround" (increasing / decreasing page size and/or page margins), but I still think there is a bug in OO Draw, especially as the problem wasn't present in OO 3.0.
