Looking though the manual of TurboPrint, I see that my Stylus Photo R220 printer does not show the "Cartridge" option, even given that it is a 6-ink cartridge printer.
Is this configuration automatically selected by TurboPrint? Or don't I have this option because I just can't print with just 4 ink cartridges in this printer?

the "Cartridge" option is only present in drivers for printers that have an exchangeable print head, e.g. some Canon and HP printers have the option to put in either a black or a color print cartridge.
You can configure TurboPrint to use only 4 inks of the Epson Stylus Phto R220 printers by setting the "bright cyan" and "bright magenta" sliders to zero (TurboPrint Control -> dialog "Configure" -> tab "Ink Ctrl").
