Epson R800 and UltraGlossy paper setup

Post by gian »

hello All,

I am a newbie here, moving my first steps with TP.

First, my background.
Moved to Linux years ago with no regrets.
I kept a Win ws just for photo printing with Qimage and my Epson R800.
My workflow with Qimage was to throw a full size unsharpened tiff to the printer.
With its clever algorithm, Qimage resized the image with correct margins and sharpening: the results were astonishing.

Now, I am trying to see if TP can replace QI, and junk the Win ws for good.
So I licensed the Studio version and installed it on my 64bit Ubuntu 12.04LTS.
I created a new profile loading the Epson file SPR800 PremGlsy BstPhoto R1.icc.
My first attempt at Gimp printing was a failure, wrong margins, too dark and way too magenta print, loaded with ink.

Is there anyone using Epson R800/Ultra Glossy that can detail the correct settings?

thanks for reading,
regards,
-Gian

Hello gian,

Probably the mentioned file "SPR800 PremGlsy BstPhoto R1.icc" is an ICC profile created by Epson for the manufacturer driver? Please note that you need ICC profiles specifically created for TurboPrint as color reproduction is not only dependent on printer, paper and ink but also the printer driver (with its linearisation curves, dithering algorithm, etc). That is why you only get a good color reproduction if the color profile is created for the TurboPrint driver (i.e. the color chart used for creating the profile was printed using that driver). We suggest to better use the built-in standard profiles or to create your own individual color profiles for TurboPrint (best results).
If you have your own color measurement equipment you can easily create new profiles for TurboPrint, but we also offer our profile measurement service to customers: Just print a color chart from the color management menu of TurboPrint Control and send it to us via mail. The created color profile will be returned by email. The costs per profile are just EUR 14,95 and are paid in advance by purchasing a profile measurement code in the online shop at http://www.turboprint.info.

ok, I got the profile: thanks!

I still think it's a little shifted towards magenta.
Just to rule out setup errors, this is how I created the profile:

cartridge: GlossOptimizer Auto
quality: 5760dpi
paper class: glossy
ink limit: 250
color data: Zedonet profile proof-studio
driver: Epson_StylusPhotoR800
user: GianLuca
paper_m: Epson
paper: Ultra Glossy
ink_m: Epson
ink: Frog

Then I imported the custom color profile file, but I got an error about a mismatch with the profile ID.

Is this correct?

Hello,

your profile settings look okay. The "mismatch" error is shown because you didn't enter the profile number when printing the color chart, so the import function can't be sure that you used the correct profile data file.

Are colors with the new profile better than before?
Do you have a reference print to compare or is magenta stronger compared to the monitor display?

The colors are better than before.

However, my test image is a nightly landscape with clouds, shooted at full moon on the lake.

The clouds are white on my calibrated monitor, but they still print magenta.

If I print the image from Gimp with the standard driver, it won't print magenta.

This was my first test to rule out cartridge problems.

Can you email or post the image (a scaled-down version should be sufficient)?

This is a good idea - we could verify printed color values and compare with profile measurement data.

Hello,

your prints have arrived - sorry for the delay! The profiled print actually looks too reddish.

It would be helpful if you could post or email the TurboPrint log file /var/log/turboprint/print.log - save the file after making a print with the color profile that we created for you. Either post the last log file section starting from "### New print job ..." or email the whole file to mail at zedonet dot de.
