I had the same problem. One year later it seems that the issue has been finally fixed. Version 2.43-1 has added a fix for Plasma 5 icons.

I used showfoto that comes bundled with digikam. As I said I am not sure about setting the Media Size and Page region to A3+ Borderless. I have exactly the same issue. I have just installed turboprint on the system and it never worked.
I have Canon Pixma Pro 9000 Mark II on a Suse 13.1 system

the error in the /var/log/cups/error_log is very cryptic

W [02/Sep/2014:14:18:18 -0400] [Job 592] Printer error!

I am not 100% sure what caused the problem, but I suspect that it dd not print because I did not set up any colour profiles and colour spaces. The printer profile was showing the Status :incomplete

The only message I got back was Printer error! It would be useful if you put more detail in the error ...
