Adding the cupsys to plugdev group seems to have solved the problem.

Upgrading to the newest Turboprint makes no difference. Deleting and re-adding the printer makes no difference. Rebooting the machine makes no difference. There is no life whatsoever from the printer apart from the "power on" light and the "paper tray select" light which are both...
