TurboPrint support suggested trying the hp515x driver and that works fine. lpr behaves itself; all the options I have tried work fine.
It was the hpcups driver that I tried under CUPS. It must have superceded the hpijs driver. One up for TurboPrint :D . I like the installation procedure for drivers ...
