printer monitor and nothing more

Hello!
I just used turboprint for first time just because I had problems with my epson r270- it showed problem with ink, but I can't find where is problem just because escputil can't read printer state in such situations. So turboprint helped me and I found that black cartridge has bad contact.
But I don't need it for everyday use (gutenprint is good enough for me) so I don't want (and really can't) pay $36 for just monitoring printer state.
IMHO, it will be good to have just monitoring for, let's say $10 (may be less).
I'll definetely buy such software.
