Hello,
I've installed Turboprint 2.11-2 on my Ubuntu Hardy system, and everything seems to work except the black cartridge is never used, even when printing only black-and-white documents. The black color is being derived from the mixture of the inks in the color cartridge, and of course it looks horrible (kind of a dark greenish grey, instead of real black) and it's draining the (expensive) color cartridge really fast.
I've searched the forum and tried both the "Mode: Black & Color" with and without "Color Mode: Greyscale" in TurboPrint printer settings, but the problem remains exactly the same.
An interesting additional symptom: when I try to set the cartridge mode INSIDE THE APPLICATION (tested with both OpenOffice Writer and GIMP) in addition to setting it in the TurboPrint printer settings, the print job is received by Turboprint (it shows briefly in the "Jobs" tab in the TurboPrint printer monitor), but nothing gets printed: it is as if the printing attempt is simply ignored, no error messages, no nothing.
What could be happening? Thanks in advance for your help.

For the Canon PIXMA iP1300, there are two settings: "Color" (only color cartridge inserted) and "Black&Color" (both print heads inserted).
This setting can be found in TurboPrint Control Center -> "Configure" -> tab "Main", setting "Mode".
Note: In the media settings "Inkjet paper" or "Glossy paper" the printer will not use the black ink. This is a limitation in the printer firmware and is also the case with Canon's Windows.
The reason is that the pigmented black ink is not smear-resistant on coated inkjet media.

I suspected the printer could be somehow the culprit, so I configured a WindowsXP partition in the machine, installed Canon standard drivers (from the CD that came with the printer) and then printed: it prints using the black cartridge without any problems, so the printer is OK.
What else can we do to solve this?

I downloaded turboprint for my Canon Pixma iP1300, installed it and it is working.

I have the exact same problem as this user. Installed new cartridges, stil the black cartridge is not used when set up as suggested in your earlier reply to this user.
90% of my printing needs are black on white documents.
Any Ideas????

Just for the record: after a long time without working on it, I've just upgraded Turboprint to version 2.12-2 (via "dpkg -i turboprint_2.12-2_i386.deb¨zedonet wrote:Thank you for the log file!

ip4000 - can't use black cartridge
My problem is slightly different. The 'configure-main-mode' setting offers only a colour option (i.e. colour+black' is missing) although the printer has a working BCI-3 catridge. Thus it always prints text files using the BCI-6 black cartridge. On the ink control page, only the 4 BCI-3 cartridges are shown.
The printer is correctly identified as an Pixma ip4000. It works correctly when I print as ip4000. The problem occurs only with the tp0 printer.
The OS is ubuntu 10.04.

I don't know what changed but it seems to print OK now. There is still no colour+black option on configure-main-color but it prints text black now. The log file extract is below - this was from printing an openoffice spreadsheet with some yellow background on some cells.
Anyway, thank you for your help - I shall be buying a key for my evaluation copy soon.
