Upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 caused incorrect colors in photo prin

Post by peale »

After upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 from 9.04, photo printouts have incorrect color reditions. The printer is the Canon PIXMA MP970. A printer test page and a printer nozzle check showed no anomalies. The photo printed correctly on the same printer from an apple machine with the Canon driver.
Turboprint printed correctly under Ubuntu 9.04. Upgrade to Turboprint 2.12 from 2.11 did not solve the color problem.

Hello,

for correct colors, please make sure that the correct media type and a high print quality has been chosen. You can verify most print settings in TurboPrint Monitor.

Can you describe the change - is the output lighter / darker / color shifts, e.g. more red / ... ?

Thanks for the reply. As far as I know all the settings in turboprint were unchanged from their values under the Ubuntu 9.04 version of the operating system. The possible exception was that the contrast was set at its minimum value of 50%.

The print came out in shades of magenta. It was as if only the magenta injet was activated. The first print came out with very low constrast. Setting the contrast to the middle of the bar or 100% produced a print with indeed higher constrast but with the same dominance of magenta. The paper was a Canon glossy "Pro" paper and the resolution was medium at 1200 dots/inch. The print was made from the f-Spot application.

Hello,

please print a nozzle test page from TurboPrint Control Center -> button "Toolbox" -> "Nozzle Check". For every ink cartridge there should be a test pattern - a black "staircase" for the large pigment black cartridge and one or two bars for every other color (two bars for large and small nozzles).

If this looks okay, please check if the two test pages from the toolbox (test & status page, demo page) look okay. The TurboPrint PDF manual has a picture of the test & status page on page 16: http://www.turboprint.info/manual/Manua ... Print2.pdf

Then print a photo that comes out in shades of magenta.

Finally, please email the log file /var/log/turboprint/print.log to me: mail at zedonet dot de (replace at by @ and dot by .) and include information on how the nozzle test page and the test pages look like.

I have done the procedure you suggested and sent the print.log file to you by email. The descriptions of the tests are included in the email.

Hallo,

the adjustment value for "Magenta" was set to maximum. The color adjustment can be set in TurboPrint Control center, button "Configure" -> tab "Correction".

The setting is also available in the print dialog of f-spot - the settings in the print dialog have precedence.

I made the correction to the magenta setting and I found black was also incorrect. I am baffled as to how these settings were changed. I had also found that the contrast had been reduced to the minimum value. Installation of the Ubuntu 9.10 upgrade could affect f-spot, but not turboprint. In any case by making sure that all turboprint settings had the default values, the appearance of the photo print was much improved. However, It was still too red compared to the same print made with a Canon driver from an Apple machine. Could the default values for variables in turboprint not be optimized?

Because turboprint would not work when I had installed updated versions of libjpeg.so, libpng.so and libtiff.so in /usr/lib, but it did work when the old versions of the libraries were restored, I wonder if the upgrade to 9.10 updated other libraries in /usr/lib that has altered the performance of turboprint. Can you tell me which libraries turboprint uses and the versions that it expects? Thanks.

Hello,

1. colors not accurate (too much red):

TurboPrint uses color profiles that have been created with a spectrophotometer, there should be no need to make further adjustments.

For correct color reproduction, make sure that the correct media type is selected (in your log file the media type is set to plain paper - if you are using glossy photo paper, please choose the correct paper in TurboPrint Control or in the application's print dialog).

2. libraries

TurboPrint does not depend directly on libjpeg / libpng / libtiff, it depends on

Code: Select all

libatk-1.0.so.0
libc.so.6
libcups.so.2
libdl.so.2
libgcc_s.so.
libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0
libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0
libglib-2.0.so.0
libgmodule-2.0.so.0
libgobject-2.0.so.0
libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
libm.so.6
libpango-1.0.so.0
libpng12.so.0
libpthread.so.0
There is no automatic "backward compatibility" in Linux, so a higher version library may not solve the dependency.

ldd /usr/bin/turboprint reports indirect dependencies to the following libraries

Code: Select all

	linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0x00a32000)

Thanks for the reply and the list of library dependencies. It is clear why turboprint did not work after I had replaced the library libpng12.so.0 with a later version, since turboprint makes a call to this specific library. That was the only dependency I had altered, and restoring this library restored turboprint to working order. No other library in either list has been updated. I will check that Ubuntu 9.10 has maintained the availability of the specific versions.

I am glad to see fixes for this problem. I am having things come out all yellow. It is like it was with gutenprint. I will have to check these settings when I get home. I did not do an upgrade but installed Ubuntu. I also printed using OpenSUSE but did not print a picture to see how that would print out. I got use to Ubuntu so I reloaded that and the print out is horrible.

Hello,

TurboPrint's color management does NOT depend on libpng - libpng is only used to load icons in the user interface.

If colors are wrong, the problem is located somewhere else:

First you should check if the printer is working properly (print a nozzle test page from TurboPrint Control Center -> Toolbox).

Then we should check print settings - you could post the log file /var/log/turboprint/print.log (section for lest print starting from "### NEW PRINT JOB").

Like the other person I think that my settings are off. Below is the print of the photo that I did. I just printed this on regular paper. The nozzle check showed every color so that is not the issue. I know on the Apple computer that this printer prints great.

Hello,

all the settings look correct - media type is setting to "plain paper", quality to "high" which should give good quality on plain paper.

Please check if a test page from TurboPrint Control Center -> Toolbox -> "Test Page" -> "Demo page Letter" looks okay. If not, please describe what is wrong or - if possible - send a scan or digicam photo of the page to mail at zedonet dot de.

My problem

Post by jmdennis »

I found out that this was my problem. We had some ink that was going to be tossed at work which I used. It is almost the right ink for my printer. I am getting some new ink and sure it will work fine then.
