Prints coming out warped 400% after preview was perfect

Post by ChrisGregerson »

Turboprint 2.21-1 under Linux is producing a stretched image with bizarre colors when using PP101, PR101, and GP301 papers (at 8x10 size).

Here is the original image:
Image

Here is the print preview in Bibble:

Here is the print preview in Turboprint:
Image

So far, so good. But here is the actual print:
Image

It is stretched about 400% wide, lined, with crazy colors. I killed the print job after seeing 1/4 of the image and tried again on the same paper, so the bad print is on the top and bottom:

I have seen this problem in the past, it might have been with an older printer and I believe I was able to use other papers as a work-around (not a fix).

The paper I'm using is Canon PP201. There is not an option for that paper, so I used PP101, PR101, and GP301. I've now seen this image corruption four times in a row with these paper choices. I used two different images, same problem (I previously was printing successfully with paper GP301 at 4x6).

The turboprint preview shows the image properly, so the preview is not accurate (not doing it's job). I cannot experiment with the dozens of settings that might be changed, at about $1 per sheet of paper plus the cost of the ink, so please don't suggest experimentation. I am not here to experiment, I can do that on my own (and already have). Rather, I would like to know why the preview shows something COMPLETELY different than what is actually printing, and fix that works.

Thanks,

Chris Gregerson

Hello,

thank you for your problem report!

To analyze the problem we would need the following information:

- your printer model
- the log file /var/log/turboprint/print.log (open the file after making a print that shows the problem and copy & paste the section for the last print job starting from "#### New print job")

Hi,

The printer model is a Canon i9900.

The 8x10 paper size is a "custom" paper size, as there is no pre-set option for that size. Below are the settings in the paper size dialog box (I've had this problem before with standard paper sizes, and also with a Canon s900 I had previously).

Image

Below is the section from "/var/log/turboprint/print.log" you requested, I include it for the last two problem print jobs. I cancelled them using the printer's cancel button about 1/4 through each photo after seeing the image was distorted.

Thanks,

Chris Gregerson

Re: Prints coming out warped 400% after preview was perfect

Post by zedonet »

It seems that the problem is caused by the custom borderless mode with non-standard paper width. If you select a paper width other than 4" / 5" / 8.27" / 8.5" / 11" / 11.69" 12.95"
an error message is displayed

"Only certain widths are supported for borderless printing.
Entering an unsupported width may cause problems:
- printout not borderless
- stains on back of paper"

In this case the firmware seems to swith to an entirely different print mode that causes the warped printout.

A workaround should be to enter 8.27 x 10.0 inches as paper format. Please note that inserting a non-standard sized paper can cause ink stains on the following prints, because ink absorbers in the printer are only placed at certain positions.

This appears to have been the issue (using 8 x 10 paper with the "borderless" setting).

I used the 8 x 10 paper again, but did not print it as borderless, and the problem was gone (the image was not warped).

Thanks,

Chris Gregerson
