Unable to select colorspace in Composer

Post by petemorris »

Hi there

I sometimes manually change the colour space when printing in order to obtain different gamuts (specifically Adobe and Wide). Since upgrading to TurboPrint 3, the ability to do this has disappeared from the new Composer tool. Instead the Colorspace drop down just says "automatic selection" with no other options. Changing the Intent does nothing. Changing the mode to CYMK allows for other spaces, but none of these are relevant anyway.

In the TurboPrint dialog in Gimp 2, and also the print control dialog settings, the ability to change colour space is still possible, but all the options except sRGB, Adobe and Apple have been removed (specifically for me, the previous 'Wide' one).

So I have two questions/issues:
1) How do I change the colorspace setting in Composer
2) How do I get the 'wide' space back, if possible?

Thanks

More problematically still, it appears that now selecting the Adobe colorspace in the GIMP 2 TurboPrint dialog no longer does anything, and it just prints using the sRGB colorspace regardless

I am aware that Composer tries to detect the colorspace of the image, but often for some types of images or after various post-production edits, I want to explicitly pick the "Adobe" or "Wide" colorspaces in order to obtain punchier colours that are not possible within the sRGB gamut.

Hello petemorris,

if the document’s color space and the color space in TurboPrint do not match, TurboPrint will misinterpret the colors and they will not print correctly. For this reason, Composer automatically selects the color space, since it knows the color spaces of the loaded images and PDF documents. Incorrectly set color spaces usually cause problems and are not intended to produce visual effects.
To achieve more vivid colors, you can also increase the “Intensity” slider in the print options.

I see. Whilst I understand your logic, that is a bit subjective as to what 'correct colours' means. Certainly having paid £150 to upgrade, I am disappointed that I now have less functionality than I had before, and can no longer print things the way I want them printed, and could easily do in version 2. It would not have been much effort to make the 'automatic selection' an option in the list rather than mandatory. Also the manual itself says things like if prints are too dark, try printing using the Apple colorspace, and that isn't therefore possible if you can't pick it from the list.

For anyone who is also finding this a problem, I have found a work-around is to load the image in GIMP, and explicitly 'Assign colour profile' as Adobe 1998 (use 'assign', not 'convert'). That then get picked up by Composer and used instead, which amounts to the same, although is somewhat inconvenient. I haven't found a way to replicate the version 2 "wide" gamut yet.
