Can't show ink levels on printer attached to print server

I have a Cano PIXMA iP1600 attached to a Netgear PS121 USB print server. The print server is attached by a USB cable to my router. I can print without too many problems from computers, all running Ubuntu 11.10, connected wirelessly to my local network using TurboPrint 2.22-2. However when I try to Show Ink Levels in the Toolbox I get the error message "Error - cannot get ink status." Is this a problem with the printer or am I missing something? When I run the TurboPrint Control Center as root (sudo turboprint) the same thing happens.

Hello rquint,

unfortunately most print servers only establish a one way connection to USB printers, there is no backchannel supported, This is why TurboPrint can not get the printer status information and ink levels. Some printer servers support bidirectional communication using a special "remote USB" driver which is only available for Windows OS but not for Linux.
