My Epson ESC/P2 Stylus 800+ goes through the self test ok when switched on. However, as soon as the computer (Compaq Deskpro running Debian Linux) is switched on, the printer switches off!

Turning off the computer results in the printer coming back to life!

Any ideas please?

Sound a bit like something I experienced: If the reset line of the printer is drawn permanently while the computer is on (defective parallel port or cable), the printer will look like switched off (all LEDs off).

I've tried another (albeit old) cable, with no joy. Looks like its (probably) the interface.

How do I diagnose the exact fault?

I've seen some diagnostic programs, but they're Windows based. Do you know of similar Linux based progs?
