Photo prints tinted cyan/blue (Canon i9900 and Turboprint)

Post by ChrisGregerson »

I'm using Ubuntu and Turboprint to print with a Canon i9900 onto Canon photo paper. After printing with good results as recently as two weeks ago, my prints are now all tinted blue/cyan when using Turboprint. It shows up in, for example, the whites of the eyes which should have no ink at all. See attachment below.

I have printed nozzle tests that come out fine. I have also cleaned and deep cleaned the print head and done an alignment test but neither helped.

Printing on plain paper with the Linux BJC8500 printer driver (not using Turboprint) does NOT have a blue cast. See attachment. I tried photographing a color target and printed it with and without Turboprint -- there is only a blue cast in the Turboprint image.

(the BJC8500 driver does not work properly with photo paper, though, so I need Turboprint for printing photos).

It appears to be the Turboprint driver. I installed the newest version, that did not help.

Please advise what I can do to solve this problem. Thanks,

Chris Gregerson

Re: Photo prints tinted cyan/blue (Canon i9900 and Turboprint)

Post by zedonet »

Hello,

I am not sure if this is an ink problem (it looks as if the magenta ink cartridge had been replaced by a blue one) or a printer driver problem or a color profile problem (which is more likely as the BJC8500 driver prints okay).

Can you please send

- the TurboPrint logfile /var/log/turboprint/print.log directly after a "blue print" - section for the last print starting from "#### New print job" is sufficient
- a scan or photo of the printer's nozzle test page

Another question:

Are colors okay if you set TurboPrint to "Plain paper" media setting?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I have attached a photo of the nozzle check page. I have also pasted the print log for a 4x6 glossy print that had a blue cast below this message.

The blue cast is still there on plain paper prints, but it might be less severe. I have attached two plain paper prints:
-a side-by-side comparison of the color target photo printed on plain paper with the BJC8500 driver versus the Turboprint driver. The Turboprint image appears to have a blue cast, but perhaps less severe than with photo paper.

-a side-by-side comparison of a digital photo and the same image printed on plain paper with Turboprint.

Thanks again,

Chris Gregerson

Re: Photo prints tinted cyan/blue (Canon i9900 and Turboprint)

Post by zedonet »

I suspect the problem is in the photo inks (photo cyan and/or photo magenta) - the BJC8500 driver doesn't use the photo inks.

For testing, you can configure TurboPrint to use only the regular cyan and magenta: TurboPrint Control -> dialog "Configure..." -> tab "Ink Ctrl" -> set the "Bright Cyan" and "Bright Magenta" sliders to minimum (0%).

Re: Photo prints tinted cyan/blue (Canon i9900 and Turboprint)

Post by ChrisGregerson »

Thanks. I tried printing on photo paper with "photo magenta" and "photo cyan" set to 0%. It did remove the blue cast (see attached photo).

I then tried setting just photo cyan to 0%. That was still blue, although not as much (see same attachment).

I want to use all the colors in the printer. What should I do next to try getting all the colors to work properly?

Thanks,

Chris Gregerson

ps. I tried making another print with "photo magenta" set to zero, but the printer is not responding for the past day. Any jobs remain cued indefinitely. I restarted tpdaemon and cups several times, the only other response I can get is "printers status failed - no access" in the Turboprint Monitor.
