Epson 4800 wahed out prints

Post by Jeffrey »

Hi,
The prints on my Epson 4800 are washed out when printed from Linux with Turbo print. They are very rich when printed from Vista.
I created and installed a custom ICC profile for the printer. This was created with the Spyder Studio, using both screen and printer calibration. Works great on Vista, does not make a bit of difference with turbo print.

I played with various controls for ink consumption, going upto 400%, no difference. I change the ink consumption in the advanced tab of the printer dialog, no difference.

I get the same washed out look with no profile or my custom profile.

I tried to print from my app, Photo Repo, and from GIMP. Exactly the same results. Both washed out.

The test page look OK, but this is a guess.

I remember, when I first installed turbo print, that I was happy with the output. Then I did not use the printer for couple of weeks. Now it looks terrible on Linux.

How do I go about resolving this problem?

Please help,

Jeffrey

P.S. I even tried to restart CUPS on the print server, not difference. I have not figured out how to restart the turboprint deamon. :(

Hello,

it might be that color adjustment settings are wrong (contrast, brightness, color saturation, ...) - please check in TurboPrint Control Center if all the sliders are in their default (center) position.

You can also post the log file /var/log/turboprint/print.log (only section for last printout) so that I can check internal settings.

Hello,

thank you for the missing part. All color adjustment settings are okay (set to default).

Two things come to my mind:

1.

The paper setting in the log file is "plain paper" and the print quality is low (360x360dpi) which will naturally look "washed out".

For high quality photos you would use a different paper type (e.g. Epson Premium Glossy Paper) and a high print quality (e.g. 1440dpi).

Also, the black ink cartridge for glossy paper ("Photo Black") is selected - "Matte Black" should be used on plain paper or matte inkjet paper to get deeper black and sharp edges.
ATTENTION: on the Epson Pro 4800 printer, changing from Photo Black to Matte Black wastes a lot of ink!

2.

You wrote that you created an ICC profile using Spyder. To get good results with TurboPrint, you need to print the profile chart also with TurboPrint. (Different printer drivers have different linearization curves and mix inks differently, so it is not possible to use the same ICC profile with Epson's Windows driver and TurboPrint)

Much better now

Post by Jeffrey »

I made the changes you recommended.
Things look much better now.
If anything the test photo was a bit dark.

I removed the profile, switched to the Epson premium glossy paper, set the DPI to 2880. My guess is that the root of my problem was the 360 DPI.

So, thanks for the help.

Now, I need a little clarification about the profile.
Should I print the turbo print chart and send it to you or should I print the chart, make a profile on Windows, with the Spyder studio, and use this profile with turbo print?

BTY: I really appreciate you taking the time help resolve this problem, and get me on the right track with turbo print.

Both is possible:

- you can print the printer profile chart image that came with your Spider software, e.g. from GIMP (only RGB charts will print properly from GIMP), measure & create an ICC profile under Windows and import the resulting ICC file into TurboPrint Control Center, "Profiles" dialog.
Important: before printing the chart, create a "New Profile" in the Profiles dialog, set the paper type, quality and name your new profile.
In GIMP, choose this name in the "Media type" setting.

- or you can print the TurboPrint chart from TurboPrint Control Center and send it to us
