Borderless printing with Epson SC-P900

Hello,

For over 6 years I have been using Turboprint Studio 2.47 together with my Epson SC-P600 on Ubuntu (starting at 18.04(I think) but recently 22.04). With this setup I could perfectly create borderless prints on any paper format, no issues. Unfortunately my SC-P600 suffers several issues rendering the machine inoperable. So I upgraded to an Epson SC-P900.

But now I'm having an issue with borderless printing (Turboprint Studio XL 2.58, Ubuntu 22.04, Epson SC-P900). Only tried this on A4 in portrait orientation yet. I do choose the A4 borderless paper size. On the short edges the print is perfectly borderless. On the long edges however there is a white margin present of approximately 3,5mm (one side ~3mm other side ~4mm). The image (compared to preview) is cropped, not scaled. The white margin is an overlay on the image cutting away part of the image.

So far I tried printing from different applications to exclude the application from being the culprit (GIMP, export from GIMP to pdf printed with pdf viewer) both result in the same issue. I also tried different connection methods (CUPS/IPP/LDP/DNSSD) all the same result. I tried adding A4 borderless as a custom paper size but again same result. I also tried setting several paper types (plain/archival matte/premium luster) but again same result.

What am I doing wrong or am I overlooking?

Many thanks in advance,
Michel

Hello Meister,

there are two different drivers in TurboPrint for the Epson SC_P900 printer - one of them with the suffix "RIP". You have probably set up your printer with the "RIP" driver. This driver is designed for full color control via TurboPrint as the print data is sent in an Epson printer language that allows addressing each ink channel individually. The second driver (without "RIP") sends image data in RGB colors to the printer, ink mixing and dithering is permormed by the printer firmware. The manufacturer's drivers from Epson all use the RGB method. Thus we recommend to use the non-"RIP" driver for photo printing. This driver should also be capable of borderless printing.
Unfortunately borderless printing does not work perfectly with the RIP driver, we are not sure if this is a printer firmware problem or incomplete print parameters in our driver. However, as this printer language is not officially supported by Epson for the SC-P900, this cannot be solved. The RIP driver is only recommended for screen printing, proof printing and DTF printing where it is essential to address ink channels directly by the driver.

Hello Zedonet,

You are completely right. Somehow I had mistakenly added the printer with the RIP driver. Now with the regular driver all works as expected.

Many thanks! Much appreciated!
