Can't get black text on plain paper

I don't want to pollute this forum with a skanky printer but it's what I have for the moment. Trying to print a simple text document on plain paper with a Pixma MG2922 with the settings in Printfab set to plain paper results in a blank page.
Is there a particular setting I'm missing? Attached are my Printfab settings.

Hello, as a first step you should make sure that the printer is working properly by printing a "Nozzle Check" from PrintFab Toolbox:
- open the PrintFab Toolbox app
- button "Open toolbox for selected printer"
- button "Nozzle Check"
Then please check if the printed page looks like the illustration below and look especially for the black staircase pattern at the top that must be printed completely.

That chart printed correctly.
I did work around this by setting the paper to inkjet even when it was plain paper. Still, the print was quite blurry and washed out.
