Problem printing some documents

Post by letaage »

I recently downloaded the latest version of TurboPrint and installed it on a network server running SuSE 9.1 printing to a Canon i950. The computers printing to the network server are Apple Macs running 0S X 10.4.8, or what ever the latest version is.

Everything seemed to be fine at first but every so often the print queue seems to get jammed up and nothing prints. Flushing the queue using tpsetup gets it going again, however it is annoying because it seems to happens every couple prints.

The problem seems to happen mainly when printing directly from MS Word for OS X. If I create a PDF file from Word then print the PDF it seems to work ok.

After a bit of digging on the internet and looking in log files I found the following in the CUPS error log file at the point when the print queue was stuck:

I [19/Feb/2007:21:38:18 +1030] Adding start banner page "none" to job 89.
I [19/Feb/2007:21:38:18 +1030] Adding end banner page "none" to job 89.
I [19/Feb/2007:21:38:18 +1030] Job 89 queued on 'tp0' by 'tom'.
I [19/Feb/2007:21:38:18 +1030] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops (PID 18983) for job 89.
I [19/Feb/2007:21:38:18 +1030] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops (PID 18984) for job 89.
I [19/Feb/2007:21:38:18 +1030] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoturboprint (PID 18985) for job 89.
I [19/Feb/2007:21:38:18 +1030] Started backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb (PID 18986) for job 89.
E [19/Feb/2007:21:38:18 +1030] [Job 89] Unknown character collection 'Adobe-CNS1'
W [19/Feb/2007:21:38:18 +1030] [Job 89] Media tray empty!
E [19/Feb/2007:21:38:18 +1030] PID 18983 crashed on signal 11!
I [19/Feb/2007:21:38:18 +1030] Hint: Try setting the LogLevel to "debug" to find out more.

Notice the error message (and I am assuming that E stands for error!) Unknown character collection 'Adobe-CNS1' towards the end.

Similarly in another point in the log files:

E [19/Feb/2007:23:36:49 +1030] [Job 110] Unknown character collection 'Adobe-Japan1'

I believe the error message about the media tray being empty is ok, as it also happens after every successful print.

So it looks to me that something in the printing process is having problems finding fonts - I've looked on the internet for how to fix this but can't find anything! I've downloaded and installed CID font sets for ghostscript, but the problem is still there.

How do I fix this??

Hello,

you are printing a PDF file which is being converted by the pdftops filter which is part of the CUPS printing system. A workaround might be to print the PDF file from Adobe's Acrobat Reader (acroread - if not preinstalled availabel for download at adobe.com) which does the conversion to postscript instead.
