Borderless Printing Ubuntu - No Turboprint option in Gimp File Menu?

Post by tuxgirl »

Hi!
I'm trying to get borderless printing working in ubuntu25.04, but I'm not having any luck at all. I am currently using the demo version of the app, as I'm evaluating whether or not to pay for the full version. I will have to go with other options if borderless printing does not work.

Printer is a canon pixma pro 200.

I did some googling, and everything says that I need to use the "turboprint" option in Gimp's file menu. That option does not exist for me. Gimp was installed via apt (not snap), and was present in the system prior to installing turboprint. I installed the turboprint deb file using apt, but also tried installing it directly via dpkg like the instructions said.

Printer prints, and the colors are nice, but even with setting borderless in the turboprint control center *and* ignore margins in gimp, I am not able to get borderless printing to work.

Interesting, cups can print borderless, but the colors don't look as good. I'm considering either just doing some work in gimp to improve the colors, or using a windows virtualbox instance just for art/photo printing... Those options aren't nearly as good, but they are free and they give me borderless printing.

Hello, the Gimp TurboPrint print plugin works only with Gimp 2.xx with the standard .DEB package, not with the Gimp Snap package and not with Gimp 3. Currently there are no plans to rewrite the plugin for Gimp 3.
As a replacement, we are working on a standalone app that can load and print images.

Please let me know which version of Gimp you have installed.

Hi! I'm using gimp 3.0.2.

Is there any way to get borderless printing currently in Ubuntu without downgrading gimp?

A standalone is an interesting idea. On windows, I was using Canon's profession print and layout system, and that worked great for my needs, but I haven't found something similar in linux. Are there any ETAs on when the standalone app is expected to be ready?

Thanks!

If you print from Gimp 3.x, a workarount is to crop the image before printing so the width/height ratio of the image is the same as of the paper.
There might be other Linux apps that allow borderless printing by enlarging the output, but I can't name one at the moment.

I have cropped the image to be the exact size and dimensions as the paper. Turboprint still adds a border when I print in gimp.

I'm thinking I may just have to find other options, if turboprint can't do what I want. I was really hoping for a simple solution, but I may have to hobble together some free things instead of buying a 1-stop solution.

Make sure to select a "Borderless" page size in the GIMP print dialog then it should work. I just successfully made some borderless prints with the standard GIMP print dialog & TurboPrint:

turboprint gimp 3 borderless.png
turboprint gimp 3 borderless.png (63.38 KiB) Viewed 283179 times

However, a small margin remained in the print dialog which not visible in the printed page because there is still enough overlap. I must admit that it is annoying to find out the correct amount of cropping.
